Question About Ripping Contacts

Im wearing Acuvue Advanced in my left eye and Acuvue Advanced with
Asthigmatism in my right eye.  I have found that many, I would say
maybe 10 of 24, have ripped where I would say only a couple of my AA
for A have ripped.  I went to the eye doctor today and I told her the
problem and she gave me Acuvue Oasys for my left eye and told me to
keep wearing the same lenses for my right eye.  I asked her how much
asthigmatism I had in my right eye and she said the least amount that
AA for A would correct.  She also said that she has not heard any
complaints about AA in terms of ripping.  Is giving me AO actually
going to do anything about this.  Also do you think that I could
possibly wear AO in my right eye as having AO in my left eye really
wont help that much since when my eyes get dried and tired or whatever
it basically happens in both eyes at the same time.  In addition to
this is there anything that Acuvue might do for me in regards to all
the ripping like send me a free box as I dont feel Im very hard on my
lenses and the AA for A lenses are perfectly fine probably cause they
are thicker or something along those lines.

It seems that your doctor did the reasonable thing, i.e. substituting a
different lens for the one that kept ripping.  Personally, I haven’t
noticed a trend for either of those lenses to tear.  Perhaps you got
into a bad batch.  Typically, the manufacturer would replace the torn
lenses without question under those circumstances, and you should make
the request through your regular eye doctor.

Now, having said that, dry eyes will predispose lenses to tear when the
lenses dry out.  Rewetting the lens prior to removal usually helps.
Perhaps you need a dry eye workup and some aggressive treatment.

I notice that the lenses almost always rip when I put them in.  Either
Ill look down in my hand after I rinsed them and notice they are ripped
or I will put them in my eye and after a few minutes of them feeling
very wierd, I feel a distinct feeling when they are ripped, I take them
out and find out they are ripped.

Your case is complicated, if you are not happy with your doctor’s
explanations, call and ask again for him to explain your problem.
Double vision in one eye could be related to a number of
conditions;consider asking him to refer you for a second opinion.

Are you using a progressive?  Sometime people notice double vision off
centre with them and you may want to try a lined bifocal.

    Dr. Judy —

I don’t wear progressives, I’ve worn trifocals for years, the ones with
lines.  I haven’t been wearing my glasses because the prisms in the
glasses bother me more than not wearing the glasses.  When I wear the
glasses I have to keep my head in one position because the minute I
start turning my head just the least little bit I start getting the
double vision again, and the prisms seem to make the problem worse.

I don’t get 2 complete images most of the time, just when I’m looking
at distance or looking out the back window when I’m trying to see to
back up (I don’t drive anymore, this is just an example of when I get
actual double vision).  Most of the time everything is fuzzy, even with
my glasses.  I would never be a witness in a court because I don’t see
features clearly and mix people up all the time.

I’ve seen 2 ophlamologists in the last 3 months.  Before I moved here I
saw an ophthlamologist in 2002.  According to them I shouldn’t have all
this trouble, but I still have the problems.

It has to be something that is hereditary, because my cousin and I have
almost exactly the same symptoms.  She’s blind in one eye and still
    sees double at a distance.

I would have just continued to muddle along, but my husband’s chronic
back problems started getting worse and he’s been unable to work.  I’ve
got several health issues and working with the computer would be the
best for me.  Back in 2002 I was unable to continue working at my job
because trying to go back and forth between the printed page and the
computer screen because of blurred vision, my eyes not wanting to focus
after I had been working for a while.  So I went to the job store to
find out what kind of a job I could get with my eyes the way they were.
I learned that if I had gone to a job store when I started having
problems they could have helped me keep the job I had.  All I needed
was a diagnosis from the OD.  I still don’t have a diagnosis I
understand except that my eyes don’t work together, and I haven’t
gotten any closer to going to work than when I started.

Sorry, I got longwinded again.  Dr. Judy thank you for your interest.
I’ll try to keep my answers shorter in the future.

You have a very large difference in prescription between the two eyes
and can expect to have induced prism when off centre.  Since your
distance vision R is likely OK without glasses and near vision L is OK
without glasses use no glasses for most tasks with a pair of single
vision glasses for computer.  Using a contact lens on the left to
correct myopia and then trifocals on top might work.

It would help to know your diagnosis: do you have strabismus?
