Who can refract legally?

Hope this isn’t too big a can of worms…

I’ve been quiet lately because of a move/kid/externship avalanche and
have not had time to do much more than download and skim the group
subjects.

I was wondering if the OD who works for the MD I’m externing with has
his facts strait?

Has a law recently been passed that states only OD’s and MD’s are
allowed to refract patients?

It was my understanding that the MD is allowed to have a technician do
the refraction as long as they take responsibility for the results.

I realize that OD’s are touchy about this (and rightly so) but was
wondering about where the line in the sand has been drawn.

I enjoy working in this field and the interaction with patients.
It’s amazing how no two people react the same, even when being
instructed on visual field testing.

Looking forward to many years in this field

galactosemia

There seems to be some controversy about the connection between
galactosemia and cataracts, both in infants and geriatric patients.

Any general info linking milk to cataracts would be greatly
appreciated.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

cataract surgery

My mother, age 73, is having catact surgery on one eye at the
end of May.  We have been wondering why they only do surgery on one
eye at a time.  She has a caretaker to help her for ther period of her
recovery.  In her opinion, she would rather have both done at one
time and have only the one surgery and the one recovery time.

Are there medical reasons for doing the surgery one at a time, and
if so what are they?

Thank you is advance.

My lens implant shifted out of position. Easy for Dr. to fix?

My left eye’s implanted lens (replacement for a cataract ridden orginal
equipment lens) somehow has gotten out of position, and I’m getting
a lot of "trash" double imaging.  Eye Dr says that, and I will probably
need an operation to fix this.  "Less tramma than the cataract operation".
Use a fine needle to poke thru the area just outside the cornea, white
of the eye area, and push the lens back, maybe rotate it 90 degrees.

Sounds like they will need to knock me out temporarly, inject around the
eye with local annestizia(sp) to kill pain and to shut off my ability
to move the eye, and then do the needle thing.  Outpatient, but not
drive myself home, though.

What’s to say if the lens won’t get out of position again?
How long to heal up?

MED: circles of light

I’ve had floaters and flashers (tiny bright lights) for about 6 years
now.  I have numerous punctate lesions on my brain of unknown
significance.  I’ve been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (but it’s more
probably CFIDS).

What’s been concerning me lately is that I see round circles of light in
both eyes when I turn my eyes far to the right or far to the left.  I
can seen them with my eyes open or shut.  I can see them in a bright
room or with my eyes totally covered.

Anybody got any idea what they are?  Thanks.
