prolapsed intervertebral disc

This is about my father’s case who is 50 years old. He is in India. The
medical community in my home town is of different opinions which has left
us confused. We would appreciate if people could share with us, what
treatment has worked with them and inform us on pros and cons of different
treatments as well as make suggestions.

My father has always been very active till just a few days back when he had
this problem which is described as Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc (between
L5 and S1),because of pressing of root nerve of S1 as a result of which
there is weakness in defecation, urination and in reproductive region i.e.
proper pressure can not be exerted.

At first he was recommended immediate surgery, but there was some
improvement with bed rest, so surgery is deferred for 15 days to see if
there is further improvement with rest. Are there any alternatives to
surgery? what are the risks in surgery.
Some other doctors suggest the opposite of rest or surgery. They suggest
him to get back to his job (physical work).

I am enclosing his doctor’s report.

Mascular Degeneration

Hi,

I understand someone is now testing glasses that help people with
Mascular Degeneration to see better.  Would love to hear more
information about these.  Thanks in advance for any info.

UVA UVB Amber Glasses

What would be best for UV protection in our declining ozone years?

Would a light amber be best since that would block blue, UVB,
and perhaps UVA, assuming the UV400 coating and meeting the
ANSI specs at a minimum?

I am thinking that an amber tinted glasses would help keep the
pupils smaller than the usual darkest grey sunglasses so less
light would be entering.

Or are the darkest grey glasses the best since they block the
most, including blue light?

Currently I just use my regular glasses which have UV400 since
I think the opening is smallest with these.

But started thinking about ultra-violet and the blue light near
the ultra-violet end of the spectrum.

Ideas please.

Here is Galvis LASIK data! – Galvis.wq1 (0/1)

I met with Steve Friedman last week and got some Galvis data from him.

First of all,  a thank you to him for giving me this data.

The attached file is from 213 pure myope LASIK operations – no
astigmatism.   I entered the data accurately and exactly as it was
given to me, so whatever is there, is there, and whatever isn’t,
isn’t.  I wish it were much more, but this apparently is all he has.
I don’t know what date range this covers, nor do I know exactly which
version of the Chiron laser this represents.  This leaves much to be
desired, but at least it’s something.  Please note that in most cases
where the age is the same in subsequent rows, that means that it’s the
same patient – left eye and right eye.

I wasn’t exactly sure how to post this to make it convenient to
everyone.  I originally did it in Excel 97, but I converted it to a
generic spreadsheet form that seems to look OK at least in Excel 97
and Quattro Pro.  If anyone can’t get this file to appear readable,
please E-Mail me, and I can send it in whatever form you need.

I also now have color bar graphs from 3150 Galvis LASIK operations,
but they really only depict residual defects after the 3rd month and
are broken down in large groups and percentages as opposed to
individual Rx’s.  I’m not going to post these because they’ll take up
too much bandwidth in the newsgroup, but I intend to scan them and
make them available as .gif or .jpg files IF I can compress them
enough so they don’t take forever to upload and download.  They’re not
ready yet, so please don’t E-Mail me until I post a message saying
they’re ready to send – thanks.

Undercorrecting One Eye

I’ve had one eye corrected with PRK with excellent results and am now
about to have the second eye done.  My MD has suggested that I may want
the second eye to be mildly undercorrected because it may delay my need
for reading glasses later on.

Before I decide, I would apreciate any comments on the advisability of
this.

Contacts and UV

Do contacts block out UV light to any extent?  If so, how effectively,
and what types of UV?

Thanks!

Mucous buildup — A problem?

Hi, I’m a regular contact wearer, and seem to have a problem with stringy
mucous(sp?) build up in my eyes.  It is quite opaque and appears sometimes
in small quantites floating across my eyes.  I was wondering whether this
was a symptom of a greater problem ie. an eye infection or something
worse.  Could anyone clarify with the small amount of information I have
given?

Thanks

Impending Lasik Procedure

Hello,

I will be receiving the Lasik procedure May 23 in Tijuana from Dr.
Chayet. Since my initial consultation with my Dr. here in Sacramento, my
anxiety over this has abated completely, and my excitment has increased.
The Net has made all this possible, since outside of specific forums such
as this, nobody I know has heard of it. My family and friends still can’t
believe I am doing it (mostly because of sterotypes of Mexico).

I”ve especially valued the testimonials from all of the Lasik patients I
have read from on the net, and will post my own at a future date.

Thanks,
Robb
