Post LASIK blindness

Does anyone know about a case done in New York that resulted in
bilateral blindness app
arently as a result of corneal estasia. I heard this via a reputable
source though the person would not say where they got the information.
If this is true it could provide for an interesting series of
discussions. I am most definitely interested especially since I am a
recipient of LASIK. This post is not intended to instill fear, but to
remain open minded.

Any feedback?

Phosphodiesterase and visual effects

I have been hearing of a phosphodiesterase inhibitor in clinical trials
that appears to induce inadvertently a "blue haze" or "purple halo" in some
of the patients receiving the drug.  Is there anything about the role of
phosphodiesterase in the eye that might account for this effect?

MED/Sci Information

Announcing the SCIENCE GUIDE.
http://www.scienceguide.com

A New Internet Directory and Information Service run by Scientists and
Physicians for Scientists and Physicians.  After visiting the Guide, If
you have any suggestion for making the Guide better please let us know.
(webmas…@scienceguide.com)

The Science Guide consists of a number of different sections designed to
help the scientist and physician find information on the internet and to
sponsor communication between those interested in science:

NEWS SECTION

Every day the Science Guide compiles medical and research news from
national news sources around the net.  Most of the news articles are
concerned with medicine, bioscience, and physics, but all other sciences
from agriculture to zoology are commonly included. News sources
currently listed include: CNN, EurekAlert, HMS Beagle, MSNBC Sci-Tech,
Science Magazine’s ScienceNow, CBS Space News, USA Today, The
Albuquerque Journal, Scientific American Web Weekly, The Why Files,
Discover Magazine, Scientific American, Smithsonian Magazine, and the
Technology Review.  The news pages also list links to news sources not
compiled within the News site.  We are currently working on adding a
number of other sources to the site to make it even more useful.

To make getting science news even easier, we send out a DAILY NEWS
EMAILER listing the articles which have been compiled on our site.
Anyone can subscribe to the Emailer by sending an email to
n…@scienceguide.com with the message “Subscribe”

DIRECTORY OF USENET NEWS GROUPS and DISCUSSION LISTS

The Directory of Usenet and Discussion Groups is compiled quarterly from
different sources around the net to provide the scientist and those
interested in science easy access to these invaluable sources of
discourse and information.  We are currently working on finding the
proper subscription method for each of the discussion lists.  This is
taking a bit longer that we thought so please pardon our dust.  The
Usenet portions of this section are complete.

ON-LINE JOURNAL HYPERLINK SECTION

The Journals Section contains links to peer reviewed scientific journals
on the Internet.  Each listing clearly indicates whether the journal
provides only the table of contents, TOC with abstracts, or the full
text of the journal

EMPLOYMENT SECTION

The Jobs and Positions Section contains hyperlinks to the best
Scientific Employment Databases and Classifieds on the net.

GRANTS and FUNDING SECTION

The funding section contains links to the best funding and grant
databases on the Internet, making it very easy for scientists to quickly
find funding opportunities.  The featured site of the section is “The
Community of Science,” a Johns Hopkins service designed to help
scientists find and continue funding.

laser technology for Lasik

I submitted an earlier post asking a few questions about Lasik surgery, which I am considering.  I have another question.  Are
there particular types/brands of lasers that I should avoid or seek out?  What technical characteristics of the laser itself
should I be concerned with?  Thanks in advance.

It works — at last!

After 40 years of trial and error, ortho-K
finally has been perfected.

The contact lenses go in at bedtime.  Remove
them when you awaken and walk around all-day,
LENS FREE, with 20/20 vision.

Works with moderate cases of myopia or astigmatism
Cases that are unlikely candidates are weeded out in
the initial fitting by the practitioner.

Would be happy to email you the article, "Corneal ‘Eye
Braces’ Evolve", : which ran last month in the optometry
magazine, "20/20."

Do I have to clean my Acuvues ?

About one week ago I began to use Acuvue.
I don’t sleep with them, and I won’t use’em for more than 2 weeks.
I have this question:

The "expert in contacts" told me that I don’t have to clean them, only
store’em in disinfectant, because they are very fragile, is that true
? Is it safe to use them for 2 weeks only desinfecting them but not
cleaning them with my fingers ?

How many hours a day can I use’em ? I know that this depends, but give
me and idea.

BTW, I’m using Opti-Free Multi Action Solution, is ReNu better ?

Regards!

Monocular patient and cataracts

My 68 year old father has gotten conflicting information about the risk of
retinal detachment with cataract surgery.  He has been monocular since birth
and obviously has concerns about this surgery.   So –

1)  Is there REALLY a 3 out of 4 risk of retinal detachment with cataract
surgery with a high myopia patient?

2)  Are there any centers in the Midwest uniquely qualified to deal with his
special concerns?

Thanks in advance!

Cornea 'dimple' and deposits?

My recent othamologist found the source to my complaints of a distortion
in my central vision (noticed only while using optical instruments with
long focal length eyepieces, my stereo microscope at work for example).
Apparently there is a ‘dimple’ of some sort of deposit 2 degs off axis of
my central vision. My doctor is unsure of the cause and only said to wait
and see if it gets any larger in time but said it should be of no concern
now. No, I don’t wear contacts so protein deposits are unlikely.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

Thanks.

Andy
