Is that an "E"?

I am really nearsighted. I can just barely see the big E withou
my glasses or contacts with my left eye and actually have to
walk toward the eyechart to see it with my right eye. Are there
many nearsighted people with eyesight this bad? Left 20/400,
right 20/600.

a visual perception test

______________________________________

Hi,
As a part of a research programme carried out at the Computational
Vision Group at the Dept of Computer Science, University of
Reading, UK, a visual psychlogical perception test is being circulated via the
Internet, the result of which will be used in our research (and will
be sent to you if you so wish). The test contains a number of images
which you are invited to interpret.
We would be grateful if you could spend a short time to fill in the
form (questionnaire) for this test which is provided at the Web page
at the following URL:
http://www.reading.ac.uk/~ssrmrouh/surv_tst/HTML/psy_tst_2.html

According to people who so far have done this test, and the previous
one, it "sharpens" our visual perception and at the same, in spite of
its scientific nature, it is not boring but rather "entertaining"!

It would be of great assistance if the above URL would be circulated
so that more people could take part in the Test as the result of this
type of test is reliable only if the number of subjects are large enough.

If you have any comments, please let me know. These comments are
highly appreciated for compiling the final result.

Thanks in advance,
Behrouz M-Rouhani

Retinal Tear?

After seeing a shower of flashes for a minute; would all eye problems
desist afterward?  For a minute I saw flashes and prisms; then no
abnormality in the last few weeks.

need advice with contact lenses

I’m a student and do alot of reading which I think is responsible for
me being slightly myopic. I wear glasses in lectures and whilst driving,
and don’t bother at other times, however my vision seems to be getting
worse and I was considering getting contacts to wear during the weekend.
My aim was to use glasses at other times, so I can easily take them off
when reading, as I don’t want to make things worse by leaving them on.

I have heard that it’s not a good idea to mix contacts and glasses this
way, and that you should use either one or the other. Is this true? and
what type of contacts should I get?
Also are there any permanent/temporary damaging effects from wearing
contacts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks…
Eugene

what % of population has 20/20 vision ???

[ Article crossposted from sci.med ]

  just curious

what percentage of the population has 20/20 vision ??  20/40 ?? etc..

do we all start out with essentially 20/20 vision and then it
degenerates from there ? – especially once school starts and reading
becomes a big part of our daily activity, not to mention working at
  terminals !! :-)

do other more agrarian (3rd world) societies tend to have better vision
or are their percentages much the same as more technologically (better
educated and hence exposed to more reading) advanced societies ??

howabout visual acuity in our ancestors from say the 1800s, 1700s, etc ?

basically is close in detailed work (reading, etc) a reason for
nearsightedness ?  and is visual acuity and its distrbution in the general
population the same now as ever ??

ps – what’s the best substantiated visual acuity ever recorded for
       a human being ???

  thanks, hope someone can answer

Help settle a bet please

Can anyone help with some information to hopefully settle a bet.

I need to prove or disprove that the quality of eyesight (acuity) has
collectively declined since the invention of glasses. i.e. has natural
selection been given a level playing field therefore leaving no
discernable selective disadvantage for any inherited trait for
defective eyesight to decrease through the gene pool.

Any pointers to sites giving health data would be appreciated as well
as personal comments and observations.

thank you,
adam.
